What Makes Someone a Good Dental Implant Candidate?

Dental implants can beautifully replace missing teeth with lifelike restorations that work just like the real thing because they are surgically placed directly into the jawbone. While this certainly makes them an attractive alternative to traditional restorations like dentures and dental bridges, a patient will have to meet certain criteria to receive them. Here’s a brief list of the qualities that can make someone a good candidate for dental implants.

Suitable Medical Health

Since dental implants are surgically placed, a patient must be healthy enough to heal properly, so your dentist will need information about your medical history and any medications you take while evaluating your candidacy for the treatment. Health conditions that inhibit the immune system such as diabetes can make patients more vulnerable to gum disease, which is a leading cause of implant failure. If you have diabetes, it will need to be under control before you can receive implants, and if you have recently had a heart attack or stroke, your treatment may be postponed.

Fair Oral Health

Dental implant placement surgery involves making incisions in the gums, so it’s necessary for your teeth and gums to be free of infections that could spread to these wounds. If you have gum disease or tooth decay, it will have to be resolved before you can receive implants. This can take the form of treatments such as dental cleanings, fillings, or periodontal treatments to eliminate the sources of infection below the gumline.

Strong Jawbones

Since dental implants are placed directly in the jawbones, they will need sufficient bone mass to support them. Unfortunately, the bone structure that supports a tooth begins to atrophy and decay after it is lost, which can eventually leave a jaw with insufficient bone mass for implants. Luckily, many patients with thin jawbones can reinforce their jaws with bone grafts so that they can receive implants after fully healing.

A Commitment to Caring for Your Implants

Once your implants are in place, you will still need to practice proper oral hygiene while seeing your dentist for regular checkups and cleanings. Even though the implants will be completely immune to tooth decay, your remaining natural teeth will not be, and the bacteria that cause cavities can spread to the gums. Leaving gum disease untreated can lead to further tooth loss and implant failure. Keep in mind that your dentist is your best friend when it comes to keeping your dental implants in great shape.
